COPD rescue / exacerbation

A COPD exacerbation is a worsening of symptoms in someone with an established diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Clinician: Abel Getachew, UK-registered clinician (GPhC 2217107). Verify registration.

Common symptoms and presentation

Symptoms can include increased breathlessness, cough, sputum changes, wheeze or reduced ability to manage usual activities.

How The Nelford Clinic assesses this

A clinician considers the established diagnosis, current symptoms, baseline treatment, previous exacerbations and any existing action plan.

Who this service may be suitable for

This service is intended only for adults with established COPD where the clinician judges a remote review and agreed rescue-plan pathway appropriate.

When online treatment may not be appropriate

It is not suitable for a first diagnosis, severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, blue lips, or any situation needing emergency or in-person assessment.

Treatment approach

A clinician decides the appropriate next step using the individual history, current symptoms and any established action plan. Treatment is not automatic.

Suitability and treatment are always decided by individual clinical assessment. A prescription is never automatic and is not guaranteed.

Safety and follow-up

Frequent exacerbations or a change from the usual pattern need a clinician-led review of the longer-term plan.

Caution: When to seek urgent care

Call 999 for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, blue lips or face, or if you cannot speak in full sentences because of breathlessness. If you have a medical emergency, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. For urgent but non-emergency concerns, contact NHS 111. See Patient safety for full guidance.
