Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormone, which can slow down the body's processes.

Clinician: Abel Getachew, UK-registered clinician (GPhC 2217107). Verify registration.

Common symptoms and presentation

Common symptoms include tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin and low mood, though symptoms can be non-specific and develop gradually.

How The Nelford Clinic assesses this

Assessment includes your symptoms, relevant blood test results where available, medical and family history, and current medication.

Who this service may be suitable for

May be suitable for adults with a confirmed diagnosis, or clear clinical grounds to investigate, who need initiation, adjustment or ongoing management of thyroid treatment.

When online treatment may not be appropriate

Online treatment isn't appropriate where diagnosis hasn't been confirmed by blood testing, during pregnancy without close specialist involvement, or where in-person examination is needed.

Treatment approach

Where appropriate, treatment usually involves thyroid hormone replacement, with dosing guided by blood test monitoring over time.

Suitability and treatment are always decided by individual clinical assessment. A prescription is never automatic and is not guaranteed.

Safety and follow-up

Regular blood test monitoring and follow-up are arranged to keep your treatment at the right dose.

Caution: When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for severe symptoms such as confusion, significant swelling, or a very slow heart rate. If you have a medical emergency, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. For urgent but non-emergency concerns, contact NHS 111. See Patient safety for full guidance.
