Hypertension

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a common condition where the pressure of blood in your arteries is consistently higher than recommended, increasing long-term risk of heart attack and stroke if untreated.

Clinician: Abel Getachew, UK-registered clinician (GPhC 2217107). Verify registration.

Common symptoms and presentation

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is why it's usually picked up through measurement rather than how you feel.

How The Nelford Clinic assesses this

Assessment includes your blood-pressure readings, medical history, current medication, lifestyle factors and any related risk factors, so the clinician can judge whether treatment is appropriate.

Who this service may be suitable for

May be suitable for adults with confirmed high blood-pressure readings where medical treatment alongside lifestyle change is appropriate.

When online treatment may not be appropriate

Online treatment isn't appropriate for a hypertensive emergency (very high readings with symptoms such as severe headache, chest pain or visual disturbance), pregnancy-related high blood pressure, or where in-person examination or investigation is needed first.

Treatment approach

Where treatment is appropriate, your clinician explains the options and how they fit alongside lifestyle measures such as diet, activity and reducing alcohol and salt intake.

Suitability and treatment are always decided by individual clinical assessment. A prescription is never automatic and is not guaranteed.

Safety and follow-up

Ongoing blood-pressure monitoring and follow-up are arranged so treatment can be adjusted safely.

Caution: When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for a very high blood-pressure reading together with symptoms such as severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness or visual disturbance. If you have a medical emergency, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. For urgent but non-emergency concerns, contact NHS 111. See Patient safety for full guidance.
