Insomnia

Insomnia is ongoing difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early and not being able to get back to sleep, in a way that affects how you function during the day.

Clinician: Abel Getachew, UK-registered clinician (GPhC 2217107). Verify registration.

Common symptoms and presentation

Common features include difficulty settling at night, frequent waking, tiredness, poor concentration and low mood during the day.

How The Nelford Clinic assesses this

The assessment asks about your sleep pattern, how long it's been a problem, your general health, medication and lifestyle factors that can affect sleep.

Who this service may be suitable for

May be suitable for adults with ongoing insomnia where a clinician judges that assessment and, where appropriate, short-term treatment or advice on sleep habits is appropriate.

When online treatment may not be appropriate

Online assessment may not be right if your sleep problem is linked to another undiagnosed physical or mental-health condition that needs in-person investigation, or if long-term reliance on sleep medication is a concern.

Treatment approach

Treatment approaches vary and may include advice on sleep habits, addressing an underlying cause, or, where clinically appropriate, short-term medication.

Suitability and treatment are always decided by individual clinical assessment. A prescription is never automatic and is not guaranteed.

Safety and follow-up

Your clinician discusses the risks of any medication offered, including dependence, and arranges appropriate follow-up.

Caution: When to seek urgent care

If poor sleep is linked to thoughts of harming yourself, or a sudden change in your mental state, seek urgent help - see Patient safety. If you have a medical emergency, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. For urgent but non-emergency concerns, contact NHS 111. See Patient safety for full guidance.
